Inspirational Ideas: My Parsons x Teen Vogue Fashion Student Experience
Hello to all my readers and subscribers ♡
Being a fashion student is more than learning trends or silhouettes; it’s about learning how to tell your story visually. One of the most memorable experiences in my creative journey was participating in the Parsons School of Design x Teen Vogue course, where fashion met personal identity in a way that completely shifted how I see creativity. This assignment wasn’t about perfection. It wasn’t about expensive cameras or elaborate sets. Instead, we were challenged to use what we already have, our smartphones, to capture 1–10 objects that represent who we are at this moment in our lives. Using my Apple iPhone 6, I documented personal items that speak through me. My story is still being written, so instead of trying to define myself with labels, I chose objects that reflect my habits, values, and creative rhythm.
The Assignment: Storytelling Through Everyday Objects
At first, the task sounded simple: photograph a few personal items. But once I started, I realized how powerful this exercise really was. Every object we interact with daily carries meaning. Together, they tell a story about how we move through the world. For me, this assignment became a moment of reflection. These weren’t just “things”; they were essentials that support my creativity, discipline, and self-expression as a fashion student.
My Inspirational Essentials (and Why They Matter)
The Planner: Where Vision Meets Discipline
One of the first objects I photographed was my planner. It might not look glamorous, but it’s one of the most important tools in my life. Fashion school moves fast, deadlines, projects, ideas, collaborations, and my planner keeps everything grounded.
It’s where I write:
Creative ideas
Goals and deadlines
Class schedules
Long-term visions
Having everything in one place gives me clarity. It reminds me that creativity thrives best when it’s supported by structure.
My iPad & iPhone: Creative Lifelines
My Apple iPad Mini and iPhone 6 are non-negotiable essentials. They keep me connected not just to social media, but to inspiration, research, and communication.
Through these devices, I:
Create and save mood boards
Stay connected with friends and family
Document ideas on the go
Follow fashion, beauty, and cultural trends
In a digital-first fashion industry, these tools aren’t distractions; they’re extensions of creativity.
The Watch: Always on Time, Always Intentional
I always wear a watch. Something is grounding about it. I gravitate toward classic gold or rose-gold styles, timeless, polished, and understated.
For me, a watch represents:
Respect for time
Professionalism
Reliability
In fashion school, time management matters just as much as creativity. Being on time is part of showing up for yourself.
Hand Lotion: A Small but Essential Detail
This might seem small, but hand lotion is essential, especially when fall approaches. I always keep a mini hand cream in my bag. Fashion is tactile fabric, texture, touch, and caring for your hands is part of caring for yourself. My go-to is Coach Hand Cream from Macy’s. It’s practical, comforting, and one of those little rituals that make busy days feel more manageable.
Makeup: Confidence in My Bag
Last but not least is makeup. I always carry lip gloss or lipstick and mascara. Not because I need a full face, but because makeup gives me the option to refresh, elevate, or feel more confident when plans change unexpectedly.
Some of my favorites include:
Michael Kors Beauty
YSL lipstick from Sephora
Makeup, for me, is about readiness. It’s about self-expression and confidence, not perfection.
This Parsons x Teen Vogue project taught me something powerful: your story doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful. Sometimes it’s found in the quiet routines, the tools you reach for every day, the objects that support your growth. Fashion education isn’t just about designing clothes. It’s about learning how to:
Observe yourself
Communicate visually
Build a personal narrative
Understand lifestyle branding
These skills are essential for anyone entering fashion, beauty, or creative industries.
Fashion School Meets Real Life
What I loved most about this experience was how it blended high-fashion education with real life. Using a smartphone instead of professional equipment made the assignment feel authentic. It reminded us that creativity doesn’t wait for perfect conditions; it starts where you are. This project shaped how I approach content today. Whether I’m creating beauty looks, writing blog posts, or styling outfits, I always ask: What story am I telling?
My Story Is Still Being Written
These objects may seem simple, but together they reflect who I am right now a fashion student, a creative, a storyteller in progress. My journey is still unfolding, and that’s the beauty of it. Fashion isn’t just what you wear; it’s how you live, create, and express yourself daily.
