Career Goals + Reads

 Hey there ♡

A Fashion Student’s Journey Through Parsons School of Design x Teen Vogue. One of the most rewarding parts of studying fashion isn’t just learning about trends or brands, it’s learning about yourself. While completing the Fashion Industry Essentials noncredit certificate through Parsons School of Design, in partnership with Teen Vogue, I was given an assignment that truly made me pause and reflect. The task was simple on paper: outline my future career goals, the responsibilities tied to that role, and one skill I need to strengthen to get there. In reality, it pushed me to think deeply about where I want to be in the fashion industry and why.

When the Job Search Gets Real

As the school year began to wind down and summer opportunities started to appear, I found myself actively searching for roles that aligned with my passion for fashion. That’s when I stumbled upon what felt like a dream position: Fashion Editor at Kate Spade.

Yes, Kate Spade.

At first, I laughed a little to myself, thinking, Is this too big? Too soon? But the more I read, the more it made sense. I’ve always been drawn to crisp color palettes, graphic prints, and fashion that feels playful yet polished. Kate Spade & Company represents exactly that. With over 168 retail and outlet locations across the United States and more than 87 international stores, the brand has built a global presence rooted in creativity and optimism. From handbags and ready-to-wear to jewelry, accessories, fragrance, eyewear, and even home décor, Kate Spade speaks one clear message: living colorfully. That philosophy resonates deeply with how I view fashion not just as clothing, but as storytelling.

A Day in the Life of a Fashion Editor (My Dream Role)

As part of my research, I dove into what a typical day looks like for a Fashion Editor. The role is fast-paced, collaborative, and highly creative, exactly the environment I thrive in.

A Fashion Editor’s responsibilities often include:

  • Managing styling needs for internal showrooms

  • Overseeing e-commerce photo shoots

  • Contributing to social media messaging and ad projects

  • Partnering with creative teams to develop fashion stories

  • Communicating seasonal product messaging

Beyond that, the role requires close collaboration with merchandising, design, buying, PR, and visual merchandising teams. A Fashion Editor must maintain deep knowledge of monthly collections, key investment pieces, and high-impact items, ensuring that brand messaging is consistent across all platforms. It’s not just about styling looks; it’s about understanding the business, the consumer, and the brand voice.

The Skills I’m Actively Building

As exciting as that vision is, the Parsons x Teen Vogue course reminded me that dreams require preparation. One skill I’m intentionally strengthening right now is reading and research, especially while multitasking. Between working, managing my blog, and acting as a creative director for my own platform, it can be easy to prioritize doing over learning. But fashion editors are informed creatives. They read constantly. They understand cultural context, history, and consumer behavior. Reading sharpens perspective, and perspective shapes great editorial work.

Back to Reality (and Gratitude)

While the Fashion Editor role is my long-term goal, I’m deeply grateful for the path that’s brought me here. With faith guiding me, I’ve been blessed with opportunities to:

  • Graduate from my certificate program

  • Volunteer at fashion shows

  • Complete internships

  • Work part-time in retail

  • Earn my Fashion Industry Essentials certificate

Each step has taught me something different about fashion, business, and myself. This journey isn’t rushed. It’s layered. The Parsons School of Design x Teen Vogue program helped me see that every experience matters. There is no wasted step in fashion, only preparation. The Book That Keeps Me Focused . One of the most impactful tools in my growth has been reading, and my top recommendation for every fashion student, stylist, or creative is Effortless Style by June Ambrose.

This book goes beyond clothes. It asks powerful questions:

  • Who am I?

  • Who do I want to be?

  • How does my wardrobe support my life?

Through illustrations and honest insight, Effortless Style encourages confidence, clarity, and intentional living through fashion. It’s not about trends, it’s about alignment. I recommend this book to all my readers, especially those navigating career goals in fashion.

Fashion Is a Journey, Not a Shortcut

This assignment reminded me that fashion careers aren’t built overnight. They’re shaped through education, reflection, and consistent effort. The Parsons School of Design x Teen Vogue Fashion Industry Essentials course didn’t just give me knowledge it gave me direction. If you’re passionate about fashion, fashion business, or editorial work, take the time to explore your goals honestly. Read more. Observe more. Learn continuously. Your dream role is closer than you think, especially when you’re willing to do the work behind the scenes.
